Knowledge Centre, St. Olav’s Hospital, Norway

One of the buildings in the project for the new hospital was the Kunnskapssenter (Knowledge Centre), a building for research, teaching and patient treatment. It houses the university hospital's auditorium (380 seats), a library of Medicine and Health, workspaces for students and facilities for research and teaching. Several of the laboratories are among the most advanced in Norway.

New St. Olav's Hospital had a goal to become one of Europe's best and most patient-friendly university hospitals. Helsebygg Midt-Norge owned the assignment for all the planning and construction of a total area of 197,500 square meters (226,000 square meters gross) in a center-based and quarterly district in Trondheim, middle of Norway.

The operations in the hospital require special needs and demands from the Knowledge Centre. It concerns the choice of solutions and materials in design and construction. Requirement for quality of for example surfaces to prevent infection spreading through cleaning. The technical installations had to be adapted to different needs, as the hospital building should have several different functions. According to the Norwegian Technical Regulations (2007), a university hospital should have an annual net energy of 238 kWh/square meter. Helsebygg Midt-Norge wanted to go even lower than the requirement, and aimed for only 200kWh/square meter per year and achieve  a passive house standard. In order to cater for the full life cycle of the building, the technical solutions needed to be flexible to make any future renovations easier. Helsebygg Midt-Norge sought a contractor to provide a total technical solution.



Energy saving affects every part of the planning process, and the energy consumption is reduced through passive measures, such as additional insulation, extra density and heat recycling. Other measures are differentiated low-energy lighting, exterior shading devices and demand control of light and air flow. By installing our own patented ClimaCeil in offices, open plan offices and in 20% of the teaching area (40% of the total area), the passive house standard is achieved. Caverion won the technical solution contract on the basis of previous involvement in parts of the development, and being the only contractor that offered a total technical solution.



The Knowledge Centre at St. Olav's Hospital is the first hospital buildings with passive house standard. All the technical solutions are saving energy, along with the very well-insulated building - intelligently controlled from a centralized system. For instance; indoor lighting with daylight sensors are turned on / off as umbrellas go up and down, and 90% of the indoor heat is recycled, and ventilation is controlled by CO2 sensors. All materials used are sustainable and safe for people’s health, which makes a very versatile and patient friendly hospital building. The energy demand will be around 45 percent lower than the regulatory requirements, according to the latest estimates there will only be an energy need of 128 kWh/m2 in the new center, which is more than 100 kWh/m2 below the government’s demands. Of a total of 10 new buildings, the Knowledge Centre was the only building that got completion certificate before scheduled occupancy.
